This was an amazing day!! So much was included - historic churches visits, xochimicil education, market tour, boat rides, Chinampas tour, delicious lunch, and more. This was such a special day for my entire group. I debated which Airbnb tour to do as my friends and I wanted to experience the agricultural side of the Chinampas and xochimichil, and wanted to have a well rounded day and this tour far exceeded our expectations. Roberto and crew were amazing hosts for such a wonderful experience. Wow! What a special and unique experience. Roberto is a great guide. We were torn between this tour and one of the tequila party boats and were so happy we chose this one. Floating through the canals of Xochimilco early in the morning was so peaceful, but the chinampa was the star of the show. Roberto taught us about local agriculture and the farmers who work hard to preserve it as part of Xochimilco culture. He let us try herbs and veggies right from the land and even from the ground (he pulled a carrot out for us to try)! We met some rescued axolotls which was SO cool, and they were adorable. He taught us about why they need a refuge and about their natural habitats, and even about a few of their personalities. Finally, he surprised us with a beautiful lunch of vegetable empanadas, fresh salad, and a delicious watermelon mint water before we floated back to our starting point. This was truly one day that we did NOT want to end! It was truly magical, thanks to Roberto and Erica! They were wonderful hosts, and we saw and learned so much! I cannot describe the peacefulness of floating on the rivers and canals in Xochimilco, under their expert guidance! We saw amazing birds, flowers and plants, and it was hard to believe that the hustle and bustle of Mexico City was so close at hand. We stopped for lunch on a private Chinampas, and it was fabulous! Walking through the gardens with Roberto and smelling and tasting the different herbs, weeds and vegetables that were growing on the land was such a special treat. The Magic of Xochimilco was a highlight of my family’s trip to Mexico City. It was an unusually tranquil experience a short distance from the bee hive of activity in the city center. While showing us the Chinampas amongst the canals, our hosts - Erika and Alejandro - offered us a unique perspective of their physical and cultural history that was different than the narratives we heard from the Spanish and mainstream Mexican accounts. A particular highlight for us was visiting the Chinampas Refugio (sp?) was learning about the agricultural practices and ajolote (axolotl) rehabilitation from Pedro. We also had a wonderful lunch made from ingredients grown on the Chinampas. Communication before the event was easy through the Airbnb app, and everything went more-or-less on schedule. We had such a lovely experience visiting with the Axolotls and learning the history of the chianmpas and how amazing folk like Pedro are working to preserve the chianmpas area. Erika and Alejandro were kind and gracious hosts and we had a delicious meal at the refuge. This was a very special experience for our entire family. What a magical day! This Airbnb experience was by far my most favorite ever — and by far the highlight of this trip to Mexico City. We were guided in a wonderful, relaxing experience learning about what makes the culture of Xochimilco so special. How fortunate we are to have spent a day with Roberto in Mexico City! His deep connection to both ancient and contemporary Mexican history and culture were matched by his warmth and fabulous sense of humor. Whether harvesting herbs or traditional vegetables for us to sample in the Chanampas, articulating the meaning behind some of Mexico City’s most famous mosaics and ancient Aztec sites, or guiding us through the warren of markets to taste the best of classic local cuisine, Roberto is a master of his craft and a most gracious host. This was my favorite experience in Mexico City! It’s unique and really allows you to uncover the true culture. Roberto is a great host. If you want to see the real Xochimilco, how people live there and the Chinampa today, this is the tour. I got the chance to see, smell, and taste the plants on the Chinampa. Also enjoyed the tranquil morning on the water. This tour is different from the tourism boat trip. It’s local, unique, and real.
